![]() Snails are important to humans in a variety of ways, including as food, pests, and disease vectors, and their shells are used as decorative things and in jewelry. Slugs are gastropods that don't have a shell or have only an internal shell, and land snails with a very small shell (that they can't retract into) are often called semi-slugs. When the term snail is used in this broad meaning, it refers not only to land snails but also to a variety of sea and freshwater snail species. The term snail is also applied to most members of the molluscan class Gastropoda that have a coiled shell large enough for the animal to retreat entirely into. Land snails, also known as terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusks, are commonly given this name. In broad terms, a snail is a shelled gastropod.
